By Charles Kelly

06 June 2008

The UK Border Agency has announced a number of changes to the national shortage occupational list for work permits.

New occupations have been added to the national shortage occupation list for work permits two titles amended. From 18 July 2008 certain occupations will be removed from the list.

The UK Border Agency has added a number of new occupations to the list mainly in the electricity generation engineering field.

Amendments to occupation titles on the shortage list

The UK Border Agency has amended the occupation titles for chartered quantity surveyor and pharmacist on the current shortage list and will now read as:

quantity surveyor; and

pharmacist (including pre-registration pharmacists).

These amendments follow consultation with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the NHS workforce review team.

Removal of occupations from the shortage list

With effect from 18 July 2008, the UK Border Agency will remove the following occupations from the shortage list:

  • CAA licensed aircraft engineers; and
  • consultant posts in:
  • geriatric medicine; and
  • rehabilitation medicine

CAA licensed aircraft engineers have been removed because there is no supporting labour market research.

Consultants in geriatric and rehabilitation medicine are being removed following recent research by the NHS workforce review team.
