New Requirement for Students Extending Visas
Biometric Immigration Document
By Charles Kelly
29 April 2008
The UK Border Agency has announced additional requirements for students extending their stay in the UK, including the introduction of biometric data.
Students applying for an extension to stay in the United Kingdom normally need to complete an FLR(S) application form.
From 28 April 2008, people applying for an extension of stay in the United Kingdom using application form FLR(S) will also need to complete the new section (7) of the application form which covers biometric immigration documents. Biometric Immigration Document is the legal term for identity cards for foreign nationals.
Identity cards will be introduced for foreign nationals in November 2008. See managing our borders
At present, students only need to complete section 7 if you are aged 18 or over and will not be including any dependants in your application.
The change will also affect married and civil partners extending their stay using form FLR(M).
For further details about the biometric immigration document, you should read the FLR(S) guidance notes or visit the UK Borders website - http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/studyingintheuk/extending/
