How will Points Based System affect you?
25 October 2008
Whilst transitional arrangements have been extended for Work Permit holders such as Senior Carers, it will not be possible to extend many immigration categories after the points-based System starts in November.
A number of existing immigration categories will close when tiers 2 and 5 of the points-based system are implemented. After November, anyone in UK under these schemes wishing to extend their stay will have to apply under the points-based system.
The popular TWES (Training and Work Experience scheme) will disappear along with a number of temporary, religious and voluntary schemes. The tough new rules have prompted many migrant workers to seek jobs in more welcoming countries such as Canada, which needs low skilled workers in the fast food industry, the United States of America and Australia.
Under the categories listed below you and/or your employer should take action before Tiers 2 and 5 are introduced, if you want to extend your stay after your current leave expires.
