revise Work Permit guidance 
for Chefs and Hospitality workers

The BIA has substantially revised the guidance notes on Work Permits for Chefs, Hotel Management and various other occupations in the hospitality sector.

Caseworkers will be now asking the employer for more information about size of hotel or restaurant, industry awards, and the type of service they offer.

The Work Permit criteria has been clarified for 39 different occupations from Accountants to Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners.

In addition, the BIA has published salary scales and suggested advertising media for a number of jobs within the hospitality sector including Hotel Managers, Head Chefs and Second Chefs.

Among those occupations considered below the skills level required to meet the Work Permit criteria are:

• Chefs in fast food takeaway restaurants
• Chefs standard fare establishments such as pubs
• Cooks and assitant chefs
• Pub or bar managers
• Hotel Receptionists
• Supervisors 

Occupations which may meet the Work Permit criteria include:

• Hotel reception manager
• Head Waiters
• Pastry chefs
• Specialist ethnic chefs such as Dim Sum and Tandoori
• Third chefs in larger kitchens
