The illegal immigrant employed by former Attorney General Baroness Scotland of Asthal was jailed for eight months last week, the Times reports.
Loloahi Tapui’s application for an extended student visa had been turned down four years before she began working for Lady Scotland, who at the time was Attorney-General. Lady Scotland was fined £5,000 for employing an illegal overstayer.
Tapui, 27, sold her story for £95,000. Sentencing her at the Old Bailey, Judge Nicholas Loraine-Smith ordered her to pay the £1,200 prosecution costs and her defence costs.
She had been found guilty earlier of fraud and other charges. The judge said: “In January 2009 you applied for a job as a cleaner for a woman you discovered to be Baroness Scotland. You deceived her into believing that you were entitled to work here and you told the probation officer that you now accept that you did deceive her.”
Tapui, who is from Tonga and is married to a Serb, will serve half the sentence, then be freed on licence. The judge did not make a recommendation for deportation.
She arrived in Britain in 2003 on a visitor’s visa, extending her stay to “study English”. She remained, working illegally as a cleaner. In January last year Lady Scotland’s PA invited her for an interview at the Attorney-General’s home in Chiswick, West London, after seeing her services advertised online.
Lady Scotland said in evidence: “The documents she produced were a letter I believe was from the Home Office, because I recognised the logo. There was a letter, a passport, a P45, the national insurance document, there were references … Everything seemed to be in order.”
Under the previous Labour administration the former Attorney General was part of the team which introduce the new system of civil penalties for employers hiring illegal immigrants.
