Border and Immigration Agency Announcement
Romanian and Bulgarian Workers

13 August 2007
In a document entitled: "Controlled Access To UK Labour Market For Romanians and Bulgarians", the Government is inviting contributions aimed at gathering evidence related to the restrictions placed on Romanian and Bulgarian migrant workers since January 2007.
When Romania and Bulgaria, the so called "A2" countries joined the European Union in January of this year, the UK Government imposed "transitional restrictions" on working in the UK.
This has caused widespread confusion for employers and migrants coming to the UK as reported by Immigration Matters.
A "stock-take" is being undertaken of the impact of this migration and the restrictions in place. Further information on this stock-take was presented to the Migration Impacts Forum when it first met on 21 June 2006.
For further details on how you can contribute evidence to the project contact A2Enquiries@homeoffice.gsi.gov.uk
Bulgarian and Romanian migrants have been arriving in the UK unaware that they are not allowed to take up employment without permission. They can, however, register as Self Employed workers or students.
