IMMIGRATION MATTERS SPECIAL REPORT

Action group started
to help overseas
Senior Carers

London. 26 July 2007

An action group has been formed under the ‘Alliance’ banner to spearhead the campaign to “Save Our Senior Carers”.

The Alliance, made up of representatives from several community groups, is considering launching a legal challenge to fight the government on the Senior Carer Work Permits refusals.

The legal costs cannot be funded by legal aid so the group will be looking to raise funds from within the community.

A special Senior Carer Meeting will be held on 25 August at a venue to be announced. All welcome.

Unison, which has 1.4 million members, is also looking into the possibility of challenging the government’s unfair treatment of Senior Carers.

Immigration Matters has received thousands of emails, letters and calls from worried overseas workers and their families since breaking the Senior Carer story last month.

We are encouraged by the news that small groups are starting to form all over the UK in order to fight for the rights of overseas Senior Carers who have made their lives in here.

Are you a member of a Union?

If you are not yet a member of a recognised trade union, join one now before it’s too late. Most major unions will help you fight your case and give welfare support if you are in trouble, provided you have been a member for a minimum period e.g. twelve weeks.

In the meantime, our advice to Filipino and all overseas Senior Carers is to lobby their local MP and sign the “Save Our Senior Carers on-line petition to the Prime Minister - http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/SaveCarers/

Employers - Are You Employing People Illegally?
A talk covering the forthcoming changes in UK Immigration Policy (Immigration Asylum and Nationality Act 2006) and the proposed Points Based System for Work Permits. Employers are unwittingly employing foreign staff without the correct work permits or visas. With new fines of up to £1000 being introduced, this could be an expensive mistake.
