Overseas Nurses
no longer welcome
in Britain

by Charles Kelly

27 April 2007

So says US recruiter, Ron Hoppe. The leading specialist nurse recruitment consultant, Ron Hoppe, firmly believes that “nurses are no longer welcome in the UK”.

Whilst this may at first appear to be a slightly over-the-top statement from someone who is trying to recruit nurses for the USA, Ron points out that “the facts speak for themselves”.

He continued:

“When you consider that within the past few months, the British government has:

  • Removed nursing from the shortage occupations list even while many positions remain unfilled
  • Announced the visa and leave to remain fees were to double
  • Increased the required IELTS score for registration
  • Made residency and citizenship requirements harder to achieve
  • Introduced the ‘Agenda for Change’ and cut the salaries of many RGNs

the only conclusion you can arrive at is that overseas nurses are no longer welcome in Britain.

I have been writing on these and other immigration issues in the popular newsletter, Immigration Matters for over three years.

There is no doubt that the British Government appears to be making things very difficult for non EU nationals in the wake of the massive migration of over 500,000 people from Eastern Europe.

Nurses are finding it harder to renew or extend their work permits and many have had to leave the UK.

The NHS has already stopped renewing contracts for some overseas staff and thousands more could be affected as the NHS cash crises deepens.

Ron’s advice to UK Nurses is clear:

A talk covering the forthcoming changes in UK Immigration Policy (Immigration Asylum and Nationality Act 2006) and the proposed Points Based System for Work Permits. Employers are unwittingly employing foreign staff without the correct work permits or visas. With new fines of up to £1000 being introduced, this could be an expensive mistake.
