The UK Government is planning to set up a ‘Migration Advisory Committee’ (MAC), to independently advise on the UK’s migration needs and trends.

At present Ministers take advice from civil servants, within the Home Office and other departments, who seek views from sector panels comprising of employers and Sector Skills Councils. Moving this responsibility to an independent body is a significant step and forms part of the Government’s strategy to overhaul the immigration system.

The consultation document was launched in November to invite views on whether a new independent body should be established and what its role should be. It is widely expected that this will include providing the latest information on labour market trends and skills shortages, advising on the points criteria for the Points Based System and the wider impacts of migration on the UK economy and society.

Whatever form it eventually takes, this new committee will have wide ranging influence over future Government policy on UK immigration, so your feedback is invaluable.
