President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in London

Immigration Advisers, Charles Kelly and Cynthia Barker, met President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, of the Philippines, in London’s Sheraton Park Lane Hotel today, in recognition of their donation to the CGMA Project. The project, aimed at helping to address the acute shortage of classrooms in public, elementary and secondary schools in the Philippines, is the brainchild of the President.

Prior to the donation ceremony President Macapagal-Arroyo addressed a packed audience of Filipinos from the UK, Ireland and Iceland. She spoke of the Philippine’s increasing prosperity and confidence, particularly in the growing outsourcing and call centre business where 200,000 jobs had been created since she came to power.

The Philippines Department of Education (DepEd) reported in September 2004 that the classroom shortage at the end of the school year 2003-2004 reached 57,930 classrooms.

Serious efforts are being undertaken by the government of the Philippines to remedy the acute shortage of classrooms and improve the quality of education for school children. To complement this, the donate-a-classroom (CGMA) project has been conceived to seek help in the form of contributions from Overseas Filipinos.

Cynthia Barker, nominating her old School, “Ambray Elementary School” in San Pablo City, to receive the new classroom said:

“I wanted to give something back to the School which has a special place in my heart. Both my parents were Teachers at Ambray and I, along with all my Brothers and Sister, received a first class elementary education.”

As well as their classroom donation, Cynthia and Charles also donated copies of their book “How 2 Come to the UK” to all the School libraries in the San Pablo area. Charles said that the book, which has helped thousands of people come to the UK would hopefully “educate and inspire young people to believe that anything is possible.”
